Technology and Support
The University of New Haven’s online programs provide the flexibility and convenience you need to achieve your career goals in a format that fits your lifestyle. Find out more about hardware and software requirements for online learners, as well as where you can access tech support when you need it.
Technology Requirements
As an online student, it’s important to be comfortable using a personal computer and its operating system. You should have a basic understanding of software and tools like internet browsers, email, the MS Office Suite, and updating applications on your computer.
Computer and Accessories
Your computer should be in good condition and be new enough to support up-to-date software. You will also need a microphone, speakers and/or a headset, a webcam, and the ability to stream video.
Recommended Minimum Computer Specifications:
Program | Recommended Configuration | Suggested Computer Model |
Business | WINDOWS PC
| DELL INSPIRON
|
Other | WINDOWS PC
| MACBOOK AIR
|
Please Note: Chromebooks and Surface in S mode tablets cannot run all required software and services and are strongly not recommended.
Computer Discounts
The University of New Haven has arranged for specialized computer discounts with two premiere vendors, Apple and Dell. Both of these vendors offer educational discounts on their product lines as well as their customized systems. These discounts vary by model and promotional period, so there is no set discount rate.
Purchases made through the Educational Discount programs are strictly between the purchaser and the vendor. Apple and Dell offer extended warranty options that we strongly recommend reviewing and taking advantage of as well. While the University provides all students with technical support, we do not stock, purchase, or provide parts.
Internet Access
Access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection is essential for online students. We recommend 1.5 mbps and broadband. Your computer and internet connection should be available 24/7. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan if you lose internet access or have hardware issues.
Software
Software requirements may vary by course or instructor, so check for any specific requirements before you begin a new class. The most commonly used are Word, PowerPoint, and PDF. You will need Adobe Reader (free) to read PDFs and Microsoft Office for Word or PowerPoint.
Online students complete their coursework through the Canvas learning platform, so you will need to access it from your computer and mobile device. Because the University uses two-factor authentication, a second device is desirable.
Tech Support
You can contact studenttechsupport@newhaven.edu or call 203.932.8324 to reach Student Technical Support if you have questions or need help with hardware or software.
